My sister-in-law was given this recipe 2 decades ago from a lady at her fellowship bible study, and it has since become THE family salad at my husband’s family holiday get together’s.

The ingredients are simple, and the dressing is quite unusual, which I refer to it when sharing it as the “Mystery Salad.”

I often will not tell people what goes into the dressing, because they immediately would be turned off by the combination of ingredients.  T

Trust me when I say, the crazy combinations work perfectly to bring a perfect balance of sweet, tangy and richness that makes this salad SO DELICIOUS!

Here’s what you will need:

Salad:

1 head of Romaine lettuce

1 container of crumbled blue cheese

1 Granny Smith Apple

1 bag of whole pecans

half a stick of butter

half cup of sugar

DRESSING:

2 garlic cloves minced

1/3 cup vegetable oil

1/3 cup of pancake syrup (I prefer pure maple syrup)

3 tablespoons yellow mustard

Empty the pecans in a ziploc bag.  Put the butter into the microwave for 45 seconds to melt.

Add the pecans along with the sugar, and toss well to evenly coat the pecans with the butter/sugar mixture.

Place into a 295 degree oven for 10-12 minutes.  Carefully watch so that the sugar doesn’t caramelize and burn.

Remove from the oven and let cool.

Chop the apple into bite size pieces. (If the salad isn’t being served right away, you can squeeze lemon juice over the apple pieces to prevent oxidation.)

Cut the romaine lettuce into bite size pieces.

Mix in the sugar pecans, apple pieces and container of blue cheese and toss well.

In a small bowl, mix all the ingredients for the dressing and drizzle over the salad, mixing it well to coat evenly.

VOILA!!!

Now watch your guests gobble it up and enjoy their reaction when you get to tell them what is in the dressing that makes it  INCREDIBLY DELICIOUS!!   I would love to hear from you after trying this salad to know if your family and friends love it as much as mine!!
